Damutan Elementary School in Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental, has taken a significant stride toward sustainable education with the formal launch of its 6KW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Hybrid System with Water Pump.
The system marks a major step toward energy-resilient education for the community.
The installation was made possible through Project REconnect of the Negrosanon Young Leaders Institute (NYLI), in partnership with DepEd Negros Occidental.
The solar power runs a water pump, providing clean water access to support the school’s feeding initiatives to combat malnutrition through the Gulayan sa Paaralan program. It also enhances the school’s water, sanitation, and hygiene program, ensuring safe water for both school and community use, a press release from NYLI said.

“We are thankful for the support of NYLI at Damutan Elementary School, and we call on everyone to take care of the system,” Julibeth P. Jesalva, DES teacher-in-charge, said.
Present at the launch were Zaldy H. Reliquias – Municipal Local People’s Council president, Julito L. Felicano – Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, Barangay Captain Rolando P. Jungco, Roralyn P. Arroz – Provincial Schools District Supervisor, and Kevin Gaitan – NYLI Executive Director.
The system is expected to strengthen the school’s energy democracy and provide a more reliable energy source for its digital and learning activities, the press release said.
Project REConnect is a collaborative initiative between Damutan Elementary School, NYLI Climate Solutions Center, and various local stakeholders.
This partnership underscores the commitment of educators, local government, and private partners to build a greener and more sustainable future for students and the broader community of Hinoba-an, the press release said.*
