Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson called for collective vigilance to eradicate human trafficking during the observance of World Day Against Trafficking at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon Park on Friday, July 28.

Lacson, in his speech, urged everyone to be more aware of this issue as it is through “united and collective vigilance that we can effectively help eradicate this menace in our midst”.

The Negros Occidental provincial government through the Provincial Committee Against Trafficking, Child Pornography, and Violence Against Women and Children (PCAT-CP-VAWC) observed the World Day Against Trafficking this month.

“Trafficking has no borders and thrives on the vulnerabilities of people,” the governor said, adding “It is a threat that undermines the basic foundations of human decency”.

Prior the culmination program an advocacy walk and a blue heart human monogram were held, which were participated in by government and non-government stakeholders.

Provincial Council for Women chairperson Andrea Si said that this is the first time that the province observed the event but let it be a reminder for everyone that it should be observed every day.

Presidential Proclamation No. 1180 declared the month of July as the “National Anti-Trafficking in Persons Awareness Month” to strengthen awareness against trafficking in persons, instill social consciousness among the general public, and mobilize advocates, especially those from vulnerable communities.

The theme this year was “Reach Every Victim of Trafficking, Leave No One Behind”.

Si said that the event aims to raise awareness of the global situation as well as call the stakeholders to evaluate efforts and help the victims of various kinds of human trafficking.

Blue heart is the symbol of the campaign to show solidarity to the victims and survivors of trafficking.

Si also urged the Negrenses to help make the province free of victims and human traffickers.*
