Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson called the frontliners who have assisted those affected by Kanlaon volcano’s eruptions and its continued unrest modern day heroes at the 127th Independence Day celebration at the Provincial Capitol in Bacolod City on Thursday, June 12.

“The eruption of Mount Kanlaon, which started a year ago, once again reminded us of the strength of our people — our first responders, our healthcare workers, our volunteers, our public servants — ordinary citizens rising to extraordinary challenges,” he said.

Lacson, who thanked the Kanlaon frontliners for their work, said they embody the same spirit that guided the nation’s heroes who fought for independence more than a century ago.

“Every year, we gather to honor the extraordinary sacrifices of those who came before us — our fellow Filipinos who dared to dream of a nation free from foreign rule, those who gave up comfort, safety, and even life itself so that we may live in liberty,” Lacson said.

He said Independence Day is not just date on the calendar and a holiday, “it is a daily duty to defend the principles of democracy, equity, and justice”.

The challenges of poverty, inequality, corruption, environmental degradation, and social divisions continue to prevail, he said.

A future worthy of the nation’s forefathers must continue through good governance, inclusive growth, responsible stewardship of the environment, and equal opportunities for “every Filipino to thrive, contribute, and live with dignity”, Lacson said.

Mayor-elect Greg Gasataya also led Independence Day rites at the Bacolod City Public Plaza.

He stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those who fought for the country’s independence.

“As we celebrate the 127th Independence Day, may we take time to cherish, reflect on, and deeply appreciate the sacrifices made by our leaders so that we can enjoy the freedom we now have,” he said.

The Independence Day celebration in Bacolod was marked with a flag-raising ceremony, wreath laying at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier and a civic-military parade.*
