A 17-year-old Grade 9 student was injured in a stabbing incident involving another minor in San Carlos City on Tuesday afternoon, June 23, police said.
The incident occurred at around 3:40 p.m. in Teachers Village, Brgy. 2, San Carlos City, outside school premises and after class hours.
In a statement, the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) said the victim sustained an injury to the lower right side of his abdomen and was immediately brought to the San Carlos City Hospital for treatment.
Authorities said the student is conscious and receiving medical care.
The alleged suspect, 17, a Grade 10 student, was apprehended during a pursuit operation conducted by responding police officers.
Police also recovered the bladed weapon allegedly used in the incident.
Initial investigation indicated that the stabbing stemmed from an old personal grudge.
Authorities said a group of youths allegedly attempted to confront individuals they considered rivals when the incident occurred.
The administration of Julio Ledesma National High School (JLNHS), where the victim is enrolled, issued a statement clarifying that the incident happened outside the school campus.
According to the school, faculty members had conducted class debriefing sessions earlier in the day following national concerns over a recent stabbing incident involving students in Tacloban City.
The discussions focused on safety awareness and the well-being of learners.
The school also disclosed that prior to the incident, the learner had informed his class adviser about a perceived threat.
The adviser reportedly instructed the student not to leave the campus while efforts were being made to contact the learner’s parent or guardian.
However, the learner left the school grounds despite the precautionary measures being undertaken, the school said.
JLNHS said it is coordinating with authorities as the investigation continues and has intensified campus security measures while reviewing existing safety protocols and interventions.
Meanwhile, PRO-NIR emphasized that the case is being handled by the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) of the San Carlos City Police Station.
Police said both the victim and the suspect are minors and that all legal procedures and child protection protocols are being strictly observed.
Authorities urged parents, schools, and community leaders to remain vigilant and help guide young people toward peaceful conflict resolution.
The investigation is ongoing, and police said appropriate charges will be filed in accordance with existing laws and juvenile justice procedures.
