Rumors being spread that former president and Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (Pampanga, 2nd District) will run against him for governor of Negros Occidental in the 2025 mid-term elections are far-fetched, Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said on Sunday, November 12.

The former president’s running against him is unlikely because they are relatives, he said.

The governor is related to Arroyo’s husband, former first getleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, whose father was Ignacio Lacson Arroyo.

In fact he was invited to dinner at the house of Gloria and Mike Arroyo on Friday in honor of their guest Rose Lacson Porteous, the governor said.

Porteous is best known for her marriage to the late Western Australia iron ore mining magnate Lang Hancock.

No politics was discussed at the dinner, the governor said.

Lacson, of Love Negros, recently announced that he is running for a third term as governor of Negros Occidental in 2025.

Negros Occidental Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer, United Negros Alliance chairman, and Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez of Love Negros along with his son, Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez, Negros Association of Chief Executives president, have also announced that they are supporting the re-election bid of Lacson.*
