Maritime law enforcers seized fishing boats engaged in illegal fishing activities in the territorial waters of Himamaylan City and Victorias City, Negros Occidental, on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
In Himamaylan City, elements of Maritime Law Enforcement intercepted an unmarked municipal fishing boat during a seaborne patrol along the shoreline of Brgy. Talaban after it was found actively engaged in illegal fishing.
Authorities said the boat was operating without the required license and permit, in violation of Section 6 of Himamaylan City Ordinance No. 99-03A and other applicable fishery regulations.
In a separate operation, law enforcers also seized one municipal fishing boat in the waters off Brgy. 6A Pasil, Victorias City, after it was caught conducting unauthorized fishing activities.
Police said the Victorias operation resulted in a violation of Section 86(a) of Republic Act No. 10654, or the amended Fisheries Code, which penalizes unauthorized fishing.
Authorities said the operations form part of intensified coastal and maritime patrols aimed at sustaining the campaign against illegal fishing and protecting marine resources.
Law enforcers reiterated that strict implementation of fishery laws is essential to preserve fish populations, protect marine ecosystems, and safeguard the livelihoods of small-scale fisherfolk.
Officials warned that similar enforcement actions will continue against fishing operators who disregard fishery laws and regulations.*
