A farmer died after he was hacked in the neck by his nephew during a drinking session in Sitio Pasto, Purok 5, Brgy. Basak, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, on Saturday, Aug. 23, the police reported.
The police identified the victim as alias “Romel,” 44, while the suspect was identified as his nephew alias “Jay-R,” 26, also a farmer and resident of Sitio Pasto.
Lt. Col. Lowell Garinganao, Cauayan police chief, said Romel was drinking tuba or coconut wine when the suspect arrived, and an argument broke out over the cultivation of a farm lot.
The quarrel escalated until Jay-R hacked Romel on the back of his neck, nearly severing it, the police said.
The victim was rushed to the Cauayan District Hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending physician.
Responding officers arrested the suspect, who was also brought to the hospital for medical examination before being placed under police custody.
The police recovered an 18-inch bolo believed to have been used in the attack.
Garinganao said they are still awaiting word from the victim’s family on whether they will file a case.
If pursued, the suspect may face homicide charges, he said.*
