Farmer found dead in Valladolid rice field

A farmer was found dead in a rice field in Brgy. Pacol, Valladolid, Negros Occidental, on Thursday evening, May 7.

The police identified the victim as alias “Joni”, a resident Brgy. Pacol.

Investigation by the Valladolid Municipal Police Station showed the victim left home earlier that day to plant vegetables in their rice field, which authorities said he regularly did.

At around 6:30 p.m. the victim’s brother noticed that he had not yet returned home, prompting family members to search for him.

About 30 minutes later, they found the victim lying unconscious in the middle of a rice field around 1.5 kilometers from their residence.

The family carried the victim to a nearby barangay road and attempted to revive him, but he was no longer breathing.

Police said the victim had a history of diabetes and had reportedly stopped taking his medication.

Authorities added that prolonged exposure to heat while working in the field may have contributed to his death.

An inspection conducted by the duty investigator and the municipal health officer showed no signs of struggle or external injuries.

The attending physician said heat stroke or heart attack was the possible cause of death.*
