‘Egay’ affects 51,136 Negrenses, three drown, fisherman missing

Flooding brought on by Typhoon “Egay” affected 51, 136 residents in 17 local government units in Negros Occidental, and 668 houses were damaged and destroyed as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) reported.

“Egay” slightly weakened as it accelerated northwestward over the waters of Luzon Strait late Wednesday and is expected to exit the Philippines on Thursday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

Three persons drowned in Bacolod City, Hinigaran and Murcia on Tuesday and Wednesday amid foul weather, while a fisherman was reported missing in the waters off Lakawon Island in Cadiz City.

The body of construction worker Victor Mahilum Moreno Jr., 32, of Barangay Mansilingan was found on the shore in Purok Sigay, Barangay Singcang-Airport, Bacolod City, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The victim was fishing in the Mansilingan River, when he tried to swim across and was suddenly dragged by strong current, the police said.

The body of Arnold Billojan, 48, was found floating off Brgy. 2 Quincihan in Hinigaran by a fisherman at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the Philippine Coast Guard reported.

Billojan, whose house is located near a river of Barangay Aranda, Hinigaran, had been reported missing on Tuesday.

The body of Richard Espinosa, 19, was also found floating in a river in Prk. Canlandog, Murcia, 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, the police said.

The police said Espinosa of Purok Monarch, Barangay Canlandog, was suspected to be a victim of drowning.

Meanwhile, the PDMPD reported 24 houses destroyed and 622 damaged in 12 LGUs in Negros Occidental.

Initial damage to livestock was placed at P104,450.

The residents affected by flooding were in Valladolid – 20,430, San Enrique – 19,869, Binalbagan – 5,275, Don Salvador Benedicto – 1,075, Cadiz City -1,045, Sipalay City – 922, Pontevedra were 708, Ilog – 417, Bago City – 360, Cauayan – 309, Silay City -260, Murcia -202, Pulupandan – 70, Hinoba-an -66, Isabela – 64, Sagay City – 49 and San Carlos City -9, the PDMPD reported.

There were 1,764 residents still inside evacuation centers and 1,781 evacuees outside evacuation centers on Wednesday.*
