Dumaguete brgy chairman arrested, drugs seized

Law enforcers arrested a Dumaguete City barangay chairman and seized suspected shabu worth P34,000 on Thursday, Sept. 25.

Anti-drug operatives identified the suspect as alias “Inah,” 49, the chairman of Brgy. Looc, and who was listed as a high-value target in the anti-illegal drugs campaign.

Authorities said the suspect, who was arrested at Purok Salampati, Barangay Pulantubig, sold a sachet of shabu to a poseur-buyer.

When frisked, 18 more sachets were found in his possession, weighing about five grams, an improvised glass tooter, and the buy-bust money, a police report said.

The barangay chairman is facing charges for violations of Sections 5 (sale), 11 (possession), and 12 (drug paraphernalia) of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

He is now detained at the Dumaguete City Police Station and is set to undergo inquest proceedings.

The operation was conducted by the joint elements of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Negros Island Region Negros Oriental Provincial Office, the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, Special Operations Unit-Negros Island Region Philippine National Police-Drug Enforcement Group, and the Dumaguete City Police Station.

Police Regional Office-NIR Director, Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, said the arrest underscores that “no one is above the law, regardless of position or status.”*
