The Department of Public Work and Highways is working to move large boulders washed down during recent typhoons to protect communities in Canlaon City and La Castellana in Negros Island from deadly flashfloods.

They are working to remove those blocking waterways to prevent floods from hitting communities in the area, Noel Ilao, director of the Department of Public Works and Highways Bureau of Equipment, said on Friday, Dec. 5.

They are also building mini dams as flood deterrents, he added.

Ilao and a DPWH team inspected the foot of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental and Oriental to determine the extent of the debris that need to be removed.

Some of the rocks that were washed downs down by lahar during the recent typhoons are as big as SUVs, Ilao said.

They are so huge, it is difficult to remove them that is why the DPWH will have to buy stronger heavy equipment, like a 60-toner bulldozer and a two cubic-meter bucket capacity excavator to hasten the work, he said.

The clearing operations will take time, Ilao said.*
