Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla reminded the prosecutors of Western Visayas to never allow their offices to be used to fight unjust cases lodged against the innocent.
Remulla was the keynote speaker at the Department of Justice Region VI National Prosecution Service 1st Regional Convention at L’ Fisher Hotel Thursday morning, June 15.
“Be honest about your work,” he said.
Remulla said in the war against drugs some suspects are included in complaints for accomplishment purposes whether or not they are guilty of any crime.
“I think that sucks, that hurts, it’s something that we have to end…as prosecutors of our country we should never allow them to use our offices to fight unjust cases,” he said.
He said prosecutors must make sure there is reasonable certainty of convicting the accused.
When all the evidence points to many things having been trumped up or evidence having been planted the demarcation line must be drawn, he said.
Remulla, in his speech, also reminded the prosecutors to avoid abuse and not to dismiss cases that need to be pursued.
“If we do not have a justice system that serves the multitude of people then society will crumble,” Remulla said.
“Prosecution is not a profession that requires impartiality, prosecution requires partiality for those whose rights have been violated…If we are not able to do that then we will have failed,” he added.
Remulla said he grants media interviews on a regular basis because it is important to be transparent and honest.
People want to know what government is doing, he told the prosecutors, as he rallied them to do the same.
