Design contest launched for Bacolod median islands

A design contest to enhance and beautify all the median islands in Bacolod City was launched Monday, April 24.

The competition will be under the supervision of the Rotary Clubs in Bacolod under District 3850 in collaboration with the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Bacolod Azucar Chapter and the Office of the City Mayor, Maria Ester Espina, Rotary District 3850 governor, said.

“The aim is to make our roads our pride”, she said.

They will also come up with a design to enhance the Familia Luzuriaga Cemetery at Lopez Jaena Street described in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only cemetery in the world in the middle of a road, Espina said.

The design will be proposed to the owners to enhance the landmark, with the city government and the Rotary implementing the renovation, she said.

The Rotary and UAP members joined Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez at a press conference at the Bacolod City Government Center.

Espina said the design contest to enhance and beautify all the median islands is open to all interested individuals and organizations who must be from of Bacolod City.

The design concept must relate to Bacolod’s call for “Change”.

The contest duration is from May 1 to 31. All drawings should all be placed in a sealed brown envelope and submitted on or before 4 p.m. May 25 to the office of the mayor.

The competition will be judged according to the following criteria: creativity and impact – 20 percent, design sustainability- 40 percent, concept and relevance – 20 percent, and originality and uniqueness – 20 percent, Rolem Basiya, UAP Bacolod Azucar Chapter president, said.

A preliminary screening will be held to select five entries as semi-finalists, who will receive a cash prize of P5,000 each, he said.

The grand winner will be chosen during the final judging on May 31, after the presentation of designs by the semi-finalists. The winner will receive a cash prize of P50,000, a trophy and certificate, Basiya said.*
