The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is donating toppled and washed down trees to local government units affected by Typhoon “Tino”, a DENR official said Thursday, Nov. 13.

The trees can be used for the LGUs’ rehabilitation work, DENR Negros Island Region Director Charlie Fabre said.

Heavy rains and toppled trees loosened by eruptions and earthquakes at Mt. Kanlaon that blocked waterways contributed to the flooding in towns and cities near the volcano, he said.

Landslides on the side of the volcano were also seen, he said.

The DENR team, along with representatives from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, have inspected affected areas in Murcia, La Carlota and La Castellana in Negros Occidental and were headed for Canlaon City in Negros Oriental, he said.

Data they obtained from PAGASA showed that the rainfall that fell in the two days that Typhoon Tino hit was equivalent to one month worth of rainfall, Fabre said.

There are also allegations of illegal logging but the trees that were washed down were uprooted not chainsaw cut, he said.*
