Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU) has assured its commitment to strengthen student welfare and campus safety following the sudden passing of a 20-year-old student on Sept. 2.

CHMSU, in a statement released Friday, Sept. 5, said Jeralyn Latoza, a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science student, collapsed while walking to her classroom on the fourth floor of the Library and Sciences Academic Building in their Talisay City campus.

CCTV footage confirmed she was with classmates before she fell behind and suddenly collapsed in the corridor.

She was immediately brought to the school clinic, and emergency responders rushed her to the Riverside Medical Center in Bacolod City, where she was given CPR and urgent care but later died.

CHMSU officials met with Latoza’s family to review the incident on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 2, right after the incident.

The family confirmed that no assault, force, or foul play was involved, the university statement said.

The university added that it is actively coordinating with authorities to ensure a full review of protocols and pledged to further improve its emergency response systems and campus health services.

“CHMSU reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of its students and to maintaining a secure, nurturing learning environment,” the statement said.

The statement added that appropriate assistance has been extended to Jeralyn’s family and that her kindness and spirit will be remembered by classmates, teachers, and the entire CHMSU community.*
