Bacolod Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez on Wednesday, April 8, called on more business establishments to join the biodiesel program by donating their used cooking oil to help alleviate the plight of fisherfolk and farmers.
The program initiated by Benitez produces biodiesel from used cooking oil sourced from restaurants and fast-food chains in Bacolod.
The biodiesel is used by fisherfolk to run their bancas, and by farmers for farm equipment.
Benitez distributed 600 liters of biodiesel to fisherfolk from barangays Banago and Singcang in Bacolod City on Wednesday.
Benitez, who personally funded the equipment for the production of biodiesel, said it will help alleviate the plight of fisherfolk and farmers amid the rising process of fuel.
Mayors of other local government units in the province have expressed interest in starting biodiesel programs in their localities, Benitez said.
Benitez said he will meet with the mayors next week.
The congressman reiterated that the program also helps prevent the dumping of used oil in drainages, which clogs the flow of water.*
