The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved a resolution in support of the bid of Senate Majority Floor Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri to restore the Negros Island Region.
The resolution expressed support for Senate Bill No. 2453, also known as Negros Island Region (NIR) Act, filed by Zubiri, and enjoins all towns and cities comprising Negros Occidental and Oriental to support the same, its author Councilor Al Victor Espino said Friday, November 26.
In May 2015, former President Benigno Aquino III signed Executive Order 183 creating the Negros Island Region, but in August 2017 President Rodrigo Duterte abolished it.
The creation of the NIR will accelerate social and economic development, and the delivery of public services to Negrenses, the SP resolution said.
The Bacolod SP gives its full support to Senate Bill 2453 as it will not only benefit the city but the entire Negros Island, it said.
Nine Negros Island representatives have also filed a bill in the House of Representatives calling for the restoration of the NIR.*
