Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Captain Manuel Antonio L. Tamayo has committed to allocate P80 million for the Bacolod-Silay International Airport development in 2024.

A post on the CAAP Facebook page said Tamayo recently conducted a comprehensive inspection of the Bacolod-Silay International Airport and was disappointed “with some areas of concern observed during the visit”.

Tamayo was disappointed with the security, management and maintenance of the airport infrastructure, the CAAP post said.

“That’s not acceptable to me, that’s insulting,” Tamayo said.

Tamayo gave strict orders to the airport staff to improve measures to ensure that the airport’s equipment and facilities are safeguarded and maintained.

The inspection was conducted to ensure the airport’s highest standards of maintenance and operational excellence, the CAAP said.

Tamayo assessed the airport’s infrastructure, facilities, and overall maintenance practices.

He was accompanied by Deputy Director General for Administration Donjon G. Lucas, Aerodrome Development and Management Service Assistant Director General II Col. Valentino A. Dionela, Intelligence and Investigation Division Acting Division Chief III retired BGen. Dionisio L. Robles, and Art Balderas of the DOTr Project Management Office.

The Bacolod-Silay International Airport plays a vital role in facilitating travel to and from Negros Occidental and the Western Visayas region, contributing to tourism and economic growth in the area, the CAAP said.

“Recognizing the importance of regular inspections, CAAP is committed to maintaining top-quality aviation infrastructure and ensuring a safe and seamless travel experience for passengers,” it said.

“With the inspection, CAAP reiterates its dedication to upholding the highest standards of aviation safety and efficiency nationwide, guaranteeing a safe and enjoyable travel experience at all airports in the Philippines,” it added.

Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said he hopes the P80 million is used to expand the airport terminal. The airport needs to be improved to meet international standards, he said.*
