Two persons were injured when a cement wall fell on houses in Barangay Alijis, while 248 families in seven flood-hit barangays of Bacolod City evacuated Saturday night, June 5, as heavy rains poured.
A father and son were injured when the cement wall of an orphanage fell and destroyed two houses in Purok Pag-asa, Barangay Alijis, Barangay Captain Deogracias dela Vega said Sunday, June 6.
Those injured were rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, while 12 families with 50 members, whose houses are near a river, were rescued, he said.
Dela Vega said he will have the houses near the river demolished because residents living in the area had already been given relocation sites at Barangay Felisa a long time ago but have refused to transfer.
“They are the same families who were also rescued on Tuesday last week amid heavy rain,” dela Vega said.
Dela Vega said he provided the rescued families food Saturday night and the Bacolod Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) also gave assistance on Sunday.
Twenty families with 109 members were affected when waters rose in Purok Pag-asa, Pacita Tero, Bacolod DSSD head, said.
Other evacuees were in barangays Taculing – 3 families with 13 individuals, Sum-ag – 15 families with 66 individuals, Montevista – 65 families , Cabug – 30 families, Mansilingan – 35 families, Handumanan – 80 families, Tero said.
Two houses in Barangay Handumanan were also washed away, she said.
The DSSD provided food packs to the 248 families, she said.
Heavy rain Saturday night caused waters to rise in some areas in 14 Bacolod barangays, Joemarie Vargas, head of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office cluster, said.
The affected barangays were Vista Alegre, Taculing, Mansilingan, Bata, Mandalagan, 3, 4, 6 , Sum-ag, Cabug, Alijis, Montevista , Pahanocoy and Banago, he said.
Eighteen trapped persons, including children, who have houses under a bridge in Barangay Montevista were also rescued, he said.
Vargas said they also rescued flood-hit residents in Purok Mabinuligon, Barangay Sum-ag. The flood was blamed on a dike built by the Department of Public Works and Highways in the area. Vargas said he will look into the matter on Monday, June 7.
In La Castellana, Negros Occidental, preemptive evacuation was conducted involving four families, Zeaphard Caelian, Provincial Disaster Management Program Division chief, said.*
