Bacolod honors veterans at 84th Araw ng Kagitingan

Mayor Greg Gasataya honored the courage of Filipino veterans and highlighted the importance of passing their enduring legacy of sacrifice to future generations at the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) rites at the Bacolod City Government Center grounds on Thursday, April 9.

Gasataya, in his speech, said heroism is not confined to the battlefield but is manifested in the daily resilience of citizens.

“We demonstrate valor every day when we persevere despite the ongoing fuel crisis,” the mayor said.

“The dedication of our employees, the service of the transport sector, the diligence of students, and the support of our business owners are living testaments to the courage of Bacolodnons”, he said.

The observance featured a wreath-laying ceremony led by Gasataya and BGen.Ted Dumosmog of the Philippine Army.

Members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines assisted in the floral offering, a gesture symbolizing the transfer of patriotic values from veterans to the youth.

The event opened with a multi-faith “Prayer of Unity” led by Father Norbert Ma. Cañada and Pastor Dave King, followed by patriotic performances by the Coro Bacoleño.

City Administrator. Mark Steven Mayo provided the historical context of the holiday, recounting the Fall of Bataan during World War II to deepen the audience’s appreciation for the soldiers’ sacrifices.

This was followed by the collective recitation of the “Pledge to the Flag” and the “Oath to the New Philippines,” reaffirming the city’s commitment to integrity and public service.

Councilor Thaddy Sayson noted that the day serves three purposes: honoring heroes, demonstrating love for the country, and preserving history.

Carmelli Bantug-Zayco, representing Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, reminded attendees that “heroism is not just a lofty dream but a responsibility imposed upon us, it is up to us to answer the call of the times.”

Closing the event, Councilor Homer Bais reminded the public: “Valor is not only found in war—it lives in the heart of every Filipino who loves their country”.*
