Bacolod ‘Bike Action’ held for climate crisis solution

About 100 bikers representing progressive groups and organizations in Negros Occidental biked around the major roads of Bacolod City as part of a nationally-coordinated “bike action” for climate crisis solution, in celebration of World Environment Day, Sunday, June 4.

Konsyumer Negros Secretary-General Vicente Flores told DIGICAST NEGROS that it was a nationally and internationally coordinated event to call for solutions against the climate crisis.

The event was joined by representatives of various progressives and non-government organizations such as the Asian Peoples Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD), Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), Konsyumer Negros, BMP-Sanlakas Negros, and bike enthusiasts from various parts of Negros, Flores said.

Among the cities and provinces that joined the event were Camarines Norte, Tanauan, Isabela, and Ormoc in Leyte, Mauban and Atimonan in Quezon Province, Quezon City, Cebu, Batangas, Zamboanga, and Pilila in Rizal.

Aside from the Philippines, Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Vietnam also joined the bike action, a Konsyumer Negros press release said.

“Commuters inhale carbon emissions on a daily basis and they bear the brunt of the Climate Crisis,” Miggy Yulo, Konsyumer Negros core member, said in the press release.

“We need concrete actions against the climate crisis and most importantly commuter-friendly cities that actually cater to commuters more than cars”, he added.

Flores also said the bikers in Negros passed through the major roads of Bacolod like the Circumferential Road, Lacson Street, Alijis, Burgos, and Bata Roads.

The June 4 bike action aligns with World Environment Day and the commencement of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) intercessional meetings in Bonn, Germany, from June 5 to 15, the press release said.

“Rich countries have to do their fair share of global climate action. This means delivering on their fair share towards reaching zero global emissions and fulfilling their obligations to provide climate finance,” Lidy Nacpil, APMDD coordinator, said in the press release.*
