The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division is implementing proactive security and target hardening measures in Negros and Panay following the bombing at a Catholic Mass at Mindanao State University in Marawi City, on Sunday, December 3, that left four dead and about 50 injured.
Maj. Gen. Marion R. Sison, 3ID commander, said on Monday that he immediately directed all Army units to take proactive measures to prevent occurrence of a similar atrocity in Negros and Panay.
Sison also ordered the intensification of intelligence gathering and monitoring on the existence of extremists and other lawless terrorist groups.
He also directed the 3ID to closely coordinate with all stakeholders and partner agencies including the Philippine National Police (PNP) to strengthen counter-terrorism operations in order to address potential threats.
Sison stressed the need to give preferential attention to places of convergence and conveyances, particularly tourist spots, malls, places of worship, airports and seaports, transport terminals, public markets and school premises, among others, as these are likely targets due to heavy foot traffic.
He also called on the public, especially the people of Western and Central Visayas to remain vigilant.
Report to authorities suspicious individuals and activities and actively participate in the collective effort in safeguarding communities, he said.
“In doing so, we can effectively thwart potential acts of terror and prevail over those who seek to destroy our peace,” Sison said.
“Amidst this tragic incident, let us not allow fear to grip and limit us from doing our daily activities. We continue to live on. Yet, we must emerge stronger, more resilient, and devoted to preserving and keeping our communities safe and our people protected from any terror attack, “Sison said.
He said the 3ID is committed to ensure that such senseless acts of violence never find a place in Negros and Panay.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines is validating claims made by terror group ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) that it was behind Sunday’s bombing.
“The AFP is validating the claims made by ISIS in the recent news reports as well as the involvement of the DI (Daulah Islamiya)-Maute Group in this heinous acts of terror,” AFP public affairs office chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad said.*
