Another baby from La Castellana evacuation center dies: PHO

Another baby from an evacuation center in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, has died, Dr. Girlie Pinongan, provincial health officer, confirmed Thursday, Jan. 30.

The 9-month-old male from Brgy. Cabagna-an, La Castellana, died on Jan. 25.

Five days before he was referred to a hospital the baby had cough and intermittent fever. He was brought by his parents to a private doctor and was given antibiotics, Pinongan said.

When the Municipal Health Office personnel saw the patient one hour prior to referral to the Ignacio L. Arroyo Memorial District Hospital in Isabela, the patient was already severely dehydrated, she said.

The patient was admitted on Jan. 25 and died on the same day from septic shock due to sepsis secondary to community acquired pneumonia, Pinongan said.

Another 9-month-old baby boy at a La Castellana evacuation center also died at a hospital on Dec. 25.

The baby, who had earlier been brought by his parents to a “hilot”, had succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest due to “acute gastroenteritis with severe dehydration.”

Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said the deaths of the babies were not caused by mismanagement at the evacuation centers, the provincial government looks after the displaced residents at the evacuation centers.

There are 9,684 evacuees still in evacuation centers in La Castellana, Bago City and La Carlota City in Negros Occidental and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental.

They are from the six-kilometer danger zone around Kanlaon Volcano that is under Alert Level 3.

They were evacuated after the volcano erupted on Dec. 9.

The Negros Occidental provincial government will launch the second phase of its providing healthy meals to the evacuees as soon as the paper work for the P50 million given by the Office of the President is completed.

The deed of donation for the P50M needs a signature from the Office of the President, which is expected soon, he said.

Their menus for the feeding of 6,000 residents displaced by the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano for a month is ready, Diaz said.

The food of the evacuees is currently being provided by the local government units where they are located and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.*
