Whimsical elves and fairies.

These are the ornaments that abound on the Christmas tree of artist Carlin Javelona Martir at Lolita Heights in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Martir, who paints and is into theater, said she has collected the ornaments on her 12-foot Christmas tree for about 10 years.

The fairies and elves look like they are from an enchanted world she still has not left even if she is all grown up, she said

“This year’s tree is my poetry of emotions and a canvas of self-expression,” Martir said.

She said her late mother, Linda Javelona, is the inspiration behind her putting up a Christmas tree every year.

When she was small she used to watch her mother, who was very creative, decorate their Christmas tree in fascination and has continued that tradition.

The smell of the Christmas decorations, the atmosphere and music reminds her of her mother, she said.

Although she gets a bit emotional putting up her tree, Martir said Christmas is a happy time of the year.

She said aside from the elves and fairies that she purchased during her travels, others are gifts from friends and relatives.

Since she was small she has always been fascinated with elves and fairies, Martir said.

To spread Christmas cheer, Martir also decorates Christmas trees of relatives and friends who need her help as a labor of love.*
