9 firecraker injuries in Negros, Bacolod

There were eight firecraker-related injuries in Negros Occidental from Dec. 21 to 26, and one in Bacolod City.

The Department of Health (DOH) reported on Wednesday, Dec. 27, that fireworks-related injuries decreased by 7 percent during the Christmas holidays in Western Visayas, which includes Negros Occidental and Bacolod City.

Dr. Girlie Pinongan, Negros Occidental Provincial Health Officer, said there were eight firecraker related injuries in Negros Occidental as of Dec. 26.

Kabankalan City had three cases, while Cadiz City, Valladolid, Silay City, Victorias City and Pontevedra had one each, she said.

The age range of those affected were between 8 to 47 years old, and the most common type of firecracker involved was boga boga.

Five suffered from eye injuries, while 3 sustained blast burns, she said.

In Bacolod City an 11-year-old boy from Barangay Estefania was injured by a 5-Star firecracker. He was treated at a hospital and sent home, the City Health Office reported.

During the Dec. 21 to 27 surveillance period, the DOH reported that only 28 fireworks-related injuries were recorded in both sentinel hospitals and non-sentinel hospitals in Western Visayas.*
