A 5-year-old boy died in a fire at a sugarcane field at Upper Mambato, Brgy. To-oy in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The child went with his father to cut sugarcane, Fire Officer 1 Michael Bernardo of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Himamaylan City said on Friday.
It is possible that the victim took a lighter and lit the dry leaves.
The father was surprised to see the field burning and immediately searched for his son.
The child was burning when the father saw him. He was rushed to a hospital but died from second degree burns.
The BFP is still investigating how the fire started.*
