There are four committed private sector-initiated power projects in Negros Island with a projected total capacity of 41.6 megawatts, the Department of Energy (DOE) said.
There are 19 power projects initiated by the private sector in the Visayas and four will be installed in Negros Island, data posted on the DOE website on July 12 said.
The projects are the 5.6MW Northern Negros Geothermal Project in Bago City and Murcia, and 30MW expansion project of the 70MW Biomass Cogeneration Plant in Victorias City, both from Negros Occidental, and 3MW and 6MW Biomass Power Plant Projects (Phase 1 and 2) in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.
All these projects are renewable energy plants.
The biomass projects in Bayawan and Victorias are expected to be commissioned in the second half of the year, while the remaining two will commence in the first semester of 2024, the DOE records stated.
DOE said that the 19 Visayas projects are projected to be operational from 2023 to 2027 with a potential power capacity of 605.67MW.
Meanwhile, the agency’s records also showed that a San Carlos Battery Energy Storage System was also committed to be commissioned by March 2025.
It is one of the 15 Energy Storage System (ESS) facilities that were committed to be built in the Visayas with a total capacity of 300MW.
However, these ESS projects were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DOE said.
Currently, there are 22 power plants and two ESS facilities in Negros Island which are operational and grid-connected.
There are 72 power plants in the Visayas that have a combined total capacity of 7,307MW, the DOE also stated.*
