39-year-old man found dead in Bais river after heavy rains

A 39-year-old man was found dead in a river in Bais City, Negros Oriental, on Sunday, July 12, after he was believed to have been swept away by strong floodwaters.

The body was discovered at around 12:30 p.m. in Sitio Kanbantog, Brgy. Sab-ahan.

Police have not yet released the victim’s identity.

A concerned resident first saw the body floating in the river at around 11 a.m. while on the way to a farm.

The resident informed the barangay captain, who then reported the discovery to the Bais City Police Station.

Responding officers found the victim face down and pinned against a large rock in the middle of the river.

Police said the man had no signs of life when he was found.

Initial investigation indicated that the victim may have drowned after being carried away by the strong current.

He sustained injuries on different parts of his body, which authorities believe may have resulted from hitting sharp rocks and riverbanks while being swept downstream.

Police said the area had experienced heavy rainfall before the incident, causing the river to rise and overflow.

The Bais City Police Station is coordinating with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, barangay officials, and the victim’s family as the investigation continues.*
