Mayor Jose Nadie Arceo has declared the suspension of work in government offices and classes in public schools in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
The EDSA People Power Revolution, which took place on February 22-25, 1986, remains one of the most significant events in Philippine history, symbolizing the Filipino people’s unity, democracy, and commitment to freedom, Arceo said in Executive Order 003, Series of 2025, issued Monday, Feb. 24.
Arceo said he was suspending classes to give an opportunity to all government workers and students to meaningfully observe and participate in activities related to the commemoration.
Meanwhile, the number of Bacolod and Negros Occidental schools that have suspended classes on Tuesday to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution are now seven.
Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias in Victorias City has also declared February 25 a no class day.
“It is a historic event that exemplified unity, faith, and the power of peaceful change”, Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias said in its Facebook post.
While February 25 has traditionally been observed as a special non-working holiday to commemorate this significant event, its status can vary annually based on presidential proclamations. In 2025, it has been designated as a special working holiday, it said.
“Despite this, our institution chooses to suspend classes on this day to provide our community an opportunity to reflect on the values of freedom, democracy, and solidarity that the EDSA Revolution represents”, the school’ statement.
Other schools that also earlier announced the suspension of classes on Tuesday are the University of Saint La Salle, St. Joseph High School, St. Scholastica’s Academy, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, La Consolacion College and Riverside College in Bacolod City.*
