Woman who found newborn in Sagay willing to care for baby

The woman who helped rescue a newborn baby girl found in Hacienda Esperanza, Brgy. General Luna, Sagay City, said she is willing to care for the infant if no one else can take responsibility for her.

Judy Ann Abapo said she is already coordinating with the City Social Welfare and Development Office to ensure that all legal procedures are followed before any custody arrangement is considered.

Abapo was among those who found the newborn at around noon on June 28.

She said they were traveling from Housing Telapaz to attend a gathering in Hacienda Esperanza when a woman signaled to them and pointed toward the abandoned infant.

Abapo said the woman ran away after they approached the baby and was not identified.

The newborn, who appeared to have just been delivered, was immediately taken to the Alfredo E. Marañon Sr. Memorial District Hospital for medical attention.

Sagay City Police Chief, Lt. Col. Alvimar, Flores said the infant is in stable condition and remains under hospital care.

The baby is expected to be placed under the care of the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

Flores said the parent or person responsible for leaving the newborn may face charges under applicable laws.

Police appealed to the baby’s mother or relatives to proceed to the hospital or coordinate with the Women and Children Protection Desk of the Sagay City Police Station or the CSWDO for the proper process.

Authorities are continuing efforts to establish the identity and circumstances of the infant’s parents.*
