The widening of two major roads in southern Negros Occidental by the Department of Public Works and Highways is providing road users with a faster, convenient, and more cost-efficient means of travel, the DPWH said on Monday, May 19.

The DPWH Negros Occidental 3rd District Engineering Office has widened the portion of the Kabankalan-Jct Salong-Tapi-Dacongcogon-Bantayan Road in Kabankalan City.

The ₱34.4-million project involved the widening 954-lineal meter portion of the existing 2-lane road, specifically in Barangay Salong, complementing the already widened road portions, the DPWH said.

The project also included the construction of grouted riprap, stone masonry, and reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings, it said.

DPWH has also widened portion of the Dancalan-Candoni-Damutan Valley Road in Ilog town.

The ₱33.7-million project involved widening from two to four lanes of the 766-lineal meter portion, completing the already widened portions, the DPWH said.

The project also included the provision of pipe culverts, stone masonry, rubble concrete, and reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings.

Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said these road widening efforts aim to facilitate better mobility, provide easement of road access, strengthen connectivity, hasten the delivery of basic government services even to remote areas, and augment economic development through agriculture.

OIC-District Engineer Sagosara D. Capal explained these road widening projects would enable smoother vehicular traffic, and improve the transportation system, benefiting motorists, public commuters, residents, local farmers, and small business owners who are considered as frequent road users.*
