Weather disturbances, including typhoons, that are causing rain are mitigating the impact of El Niño, Negros Occidental Acting Provincial Agriculturist Dina Genzola said on Friday, Nov. 17.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has reported that a moderate-to-strong El Niño is present in the tropical Pacific, showing signs of further intensification in the coming months.
In some areas of the Philippines it will likely be manifested during the last quarter of the year and unto the first quarter of 2024, PAGASA said.
The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist early on adopted mitigating measures in preparation for El Niño, which is currently moderate in Negros Occidental, Genzola said.
They have conducted information drives on what farmers should do to lessen the impact of El Niño, like planting drought resistant seeds and setting up small water reservoirs, she said.*
