Voter registration reopens August 1 to 10 amidst BSKE postponement uncertainty

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to resume the nationwide voter registration from August 1 to 10 in preparation for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

This comes as uncertainty looms over the exact date of the polls, which could be held on December 1 or be postponed, Negros Occidental Provincial Elections Supervisor Ian Lee Ananoria said on Thursday, July 10.

Ananoria said the registration drive is a proactive measure by Comelec despite the lack of a definitive decision regarding the BSKE schedule.

If the elections proceed in December, voters aged 15 to 17 will be eligible to register for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls, he said.

The potential for a postponement stems from a bill currently awaiting action from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The proposed legislation seeks to extend the terms of office for barangay and SK officials from three to four years and reschedule the elections to the first Monday of November 2026.

Marcos has yet to approve or veto the measure.

Ananoria noted that if the President takes no action on the bill within 30 days of its receipt, it will automatically lapse into law.*
