The Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinarian said hog raisers should have their pigs vaccinated against cholera and implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent a resurgence of African Swine Fever (ASF).
Dr. Placeda Lemana issued the reminder on Wednesday, June 17, amid alarm raised over a reported resurgence of pig deaths, especially in southern Negros.
She said the PVO has conducted surveillance and taken samples from pigs, and some tested positive for hog cholera.
Lemana said there was also an isolated case of ASF incursion but it did not spread and affect other pigs.
It is important that raisers have their pig properly vaccinated against hog cholera, she said.
The signs and symptoms of hog cholera are the same as ASF, she said.
“With regards to ASF there is no vaccine for it so biosecurity is the key,” Lemana said.
The ASF incursion was properly handled and controlled, Department of Agriculture Regional Director Jose Albert Barrogo said.
“It was handled properly by the Provincial Veterinary Office and the Local Government Unit by applying proper protocols,” he said.
He said the DA is working closely with the PVO and LGUs in the surveillance.
The surveillance is being conducted to ensure the implementation of proper protocols to arrest the spread of any virus, he said.*
