Vet: Kanlaon eruption affects animal size

There were no reported animal deaths from the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano, but a decrease in the size of some animals has been observed, Dr. Placeda Lemana, Negros Occidental provincial veterinarian, said on Thursday, Dec. 5.

She said her office together with its partners will continue to conduct veterinary medical missions for animals in the areas affected by the volcanic ash.

Lemana said they conducted a veterinary medical mission in Brgy Masulog in La Castellana.

Stunted growth and weight loss in the animals were the effects they saw, she said.

The grazing of animals have been affected by ash fall, she said.

Respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia in animals have also been observed, Lemana said.*
