Drivers groups will stage a nationally coordinated protest if the suspension of their fuel subsidy payout is not lifted, Diego Malacad, United Negros Drivers and Operators Center secretary general, said Tuesday, April 5.
The drivers are already suffering a lot from the fuel price increases, they need immediate relief, he said.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Monday announced the temporary suspension of the P6,500 fuel subsidy payout for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators due to the election ban on public spending.
The distribution of the cash assistance on March 25 was suspended pending resolution by the Commission on Elections of its request for exemption from the spending ban during the election period, LTFRB executive director Kristina Cassion said.
Malacad said they are hoping the Comelec will exempt the subsidy from the ban soon.*
