About 500 residents of La Castellana town in Negros Occidental, whose houses were destroyed by Typhoon Tino two months ago, remain in evacuation centers.

“Their houses were washed out, so they have nothing to return to,”John de Asis, head of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of La Castellana, said on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Some of the evacuees continue to stay in schools and other evacuation sites, he said.

About 4,000 La Castellana residents were displaced when Typhoon Tino struck on November 4.

They have asked the schools to allow the evacuees’ stay until they can be transferred so face-to-face classes can resume, de Asis said.

He said negotiations for a permanent relocation site for displaced La Castellana residents are ongoing.*
