The construction of a tunnel to connect Himamaylan City in Negros Occidental to Tayasan in Negros Oriental is being eyed.
Himamaylan Mayor Raymund Tongson said on Wednesday, June 25, that the tunnel estimated to cost P12 billion has the support of an international firm.
He has met with National Economic and Development Authority and Department of Public Works and Highways officials to discuss the project, Tongson said.
He said the Himamaylan port will also be able to accept roll on roll off vessels before the end of the year.
Tongson said he will be working on tapping resources from national government agencies for projects in Himamaylan City.
He will also work with officials even from opposing political camps for the good of Himamaylan, Tongson said.
He said 9 out of 12 of the Himamaylan Sangguniang Panlungsod members are his allies so he does see any problems.
Meanwhile, “I’m very, very happy with my personal and private life, somebody owns my heart,” he said.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson administered the oath of office to the newly elected officials of Himamaylan City at his office at the Provincial Capitol in Bacolod City on Wednesday.
Leading the group were Tongson and Vice Mayor Justin Gatuslao.

They were joined by Sangguniang Panlungsod members Julie Ann Vasquez, Johny Ades, Emmanuel Castro, Ricky Genova, Richard Genada, Pablo Libo-on, Teresita Gamposilao, Esther Marie Tongson, Jacinto Castillo, and Marie Antoinette Limsiaco who also took their oaths.*.
