Truck driver faces charges after fatal Sagay collision

A truck driver is facing multiple charges after allegedly hitting a motorcycle, killing a man and injuring his wife, along the highway in Hacienda Esperanza, Barangay Poblacion 1, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday, July 5.

The victims were identified as Renaldo Panton, 39, a businessman, and his wife, Analyn Panton, 39, of Barangay Vito, Sagay City.

The suspect was identified as Christopher Villaceran, 31, a resident of Barangay Rafaela Barrera, Sagay City.

Villaceran is now undergoing inquest proceedings, Lt. Col. Alvimar Flores, Sagay Police chief, said.

Based on the initial police investigation, both the truck and the motorcycle were traveling in the same direction toward Barangay Rafaela Barrera when the incident occurred.

The truck was reportedly overtaking another vehicle when the motorcycle also attempted to overtake leading to a collision.

The impact caused serious injuries to the couple.

Both were rushed to the Alfredo E. Marañon Sr. Memorial District Hospital, but Renaldo was declared dead.

Lt. Col. Flores confirmed that Villaceran will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injuries, and damage to property.*
