Tax relief ordinance nearing completion

The Negros Occidental Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Finance is in the final stages of fine tuning an ordinance that will provide relief to delinquent real property tax (RPT) payers, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz said today, February 16.

The committee that met today is coming up with a win-win solution that will allow the provincial government to collect P2.5 billion in delinquent RPT payments.

The original amount was P2.8 billion but it dropped to P2.5 billion in December when landowners availed of the 20 percent discount offered by the provincial government for prompt and advance payments, Diaz said.

Under the proposed tax relief ordinance, landowners will be able to enter into a compromise agreement for a two-year payment of their delinquent taxes. During the two-year period, interest on their unpaid taxes will be waived, he said.

The offer for compromise agreements will begin as soon as the ordinance is passed and will last until September or December, depending on the wisdom of the SP.

Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer said they may pass the ordinance before the end of the month.*
