Strong winds topple houses, trigger power outages

Strong winds brought on by severe tropical storm Kristine toppled houses and power lines, while flooding affected 6,797 residents in 15 local government units in Negros Occidental on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Sea travel from Bacolod to Iloilo and Sagay to Bantayan were suspended even after Storm Signal No. 1 over Negros was lifted Thursday morning, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported.

Some Cebu Pacific flights were also cancelled.

Classes in 23 LGUs were also suspended on Thursday.

Bacolod City, Talisay City, Silay City, Sipalay City, Himamaylan City, Bago City, La Carlota City, Escalante City, Kabankalan City, La Castellana, Ilog, EB Magalona, Valladolid, Binalbagan, Pulupandan, Pontevedra, Isabela, Don Salvador Benedicto, Murcia, Manapla, and Cauayan have extended their suspension of face-to-face classes to Friday.

Damage to crops caused by heavy rains and flooding was P3,221,433 affecting 206 farmers, fisheries – P575,930 and livestock – P131,564 for a total P3,998, 927, PDRRMC reported.

Affected by floods and strong winds were 1,906 families with 6,797 individuals in 80 barangays in Bago City, Cadiz City, Sipalay City, Sagay City, Hinigaran, Hinoba-an, Silay City, La Carlota City, Cauayan, Ilog, Binalbagan, Escalante, Isabela, Pontevedra and Valladolid.

There were 971 families with 3,319 members still in evacuation centers.

Strong winds destroyed seven houses and damaged 22, the PDRRMC report said.

Five areas hit by landslides had been cleared while two damaged bridges were passable to light vehicles, it added.

In Barangay Patag, Silay City, strong wind toppled trees hitting houses in the area.

Five houses in Barangay Banago Bacolod, were also destroyed by strong waves and wind Thursday morning.*
