The Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod approved two resolutions on Wednesday, Dec. 20, urging Bacolodnons to observe an environment-friendly Christmas and requesting more police visibility at venues frequented by the public during the holidays.

Both resolutions were authored by Councilor Em Ang.

Ang, in her resolution, said because the celebration of Christmas creates more recyclable waste than at any other time of the year, Bacolodnons are urged to help cut the impact of pollution by exchanging eco-friendly Christmas gifts, using green trees, homemade decorations, LED lights to save on energy, recycling wrapping paper, putting gifts in reusable bags and patronizing products of companies or organizations known to implement green practices.

Aside from keeping parties clean, the citizenry can also benefit by segregating bio-degradable, recyclable, and unusable wastes as well as holding activities that would promote environmental causes such as tree-planting, the resolution said.

Bacolodnons should be responsible in disposing of trash, so as not to wreak havoc on the already degraded environment, the resolution added.

“Christmas should be a time to give thanks to our Creator for giving us one earth to live in, and the best way to show this gratitude is by being responsible stewards of His creation,” it said.

The other resolution calls on Bacolod City Police Director, Col. Noel Aliño, to increase police visibility in major places in the city frequented by visitors at night during the holidays.

These places include the Bacolod Baywalk, the Bacolod Public Plaza, Bacolod City Government Center, Yoyo Land and the Provincial Capitol Lagoon, the resolution said.

Police visibility must be increased to maintain security, peace and order in those areas, it said.*
