A New People’s Army (NPA) member who was killed and abandoned following armed encounters in Brgy. Bi-ao, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, was laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 4.
The Philippine Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion assisted the Binalbagan local government unit in providing a proper burial to the deceased combatant in coordination with local authorities and concerned offices.
The armed encounters occurred on Jan. 30 in the hinterlands of Barangay Bi-ao between troops of the 94th Infantry Battalion and remnants of an NPA group, after which the body of the slain member was left behind by his fleeing companions.
Army officials said the remains were recovered and handled in accordance with humanitarian standards and respect for human dignity.
Lt. Col. Ziegfred D. Tayaban, commanding officer of the 94th Infantry Battalion, said providing a decent burial reflects the professionalism of soldiers and their adherence to humanitarian values even amid armed conflict.
