The “Paris of Negros” shone a little brighter this week as the San Diego Pro-Cathedral in Silay City officially unveiled its newly illuminated exterior, marking a historic milestone for both the parish and the local community.

The ceremonial lighting, held on Monday, January 12, serves as a centerpiece for two major milestones: the 100th anniversary of the cathedral structure and the 250th founding anniversary of the Parish of San Diego, which dates back to 1776.

The event drew a diverse crowd of church faithful, local government officials, and representatives from Negros Power.

The atmosphere was described as warm and communal, reflecting the deep-seated pride Silay residents hold for their cultural landmarks.

The program commenced with a blessing led by Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Angelo J. Ansula, followed by an address from Silay Mayor Joedith Gallego.

The mayor emphasized that the lighting project is more than an aesthetic upgrade, it is a vital contribution to the city’s identity and its burgeoning cultural heritage tourism.

Engr. Bailey Del Castillo, chief Operations Officer of Negros Power, delivered the turnover message, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind the initiative, which was accepted by the parish priest.

“This project showed how the San Diego Pro-Cathedral, the local government, and Negros Power worked together to celebrate and promote cultural heritage tourism. The teamwork highlighted the importance of local landmarks and community pride,” he said.

“May this light that shines upon our church remind us of hope, truth, and the values we hold dear,” said. Ansula during his address.

“This beautiful illumination serves as a reminder of our unity and commitment to uplift our community’s spirit”, he said.*
