Second jail escapee killed, manhunt for 2 others ongoing

A second escapee of the Negros Occidental District Jail in Bago City was killed after he allegedly resisted arrest at Sitio Ambulo, Barangay San Fernando, Talisay City, Negros Occidental, Friday, July 2.

Killed was Danilo Celeste of Victorias City, who was facing charges for carnapping, robbery, illegal possession of firearms, and attempted homicide.

Celeste was among five high-risk inmates who escaped by cutting the grills of their cell window and tying their clothes and different pieces of cloth together to climb over a 20-foot wall on June 29.

A day after, on June 30, they were cornered at Hacienda Velez in Barangay Blumentritt, Murcia, that left his brother, Marvin Celeste, who was facing charges for illegal possession of firearms, dead. Daniel Tamon of Salvador Benedicto town, who is facing murder charges, was arrested.

Two days later, on July 2, pursuing authorities tracked down the remaining escapees at Talisay following reported sightings.

Lawyer Jairus Anthony Dogelio, spokesperson of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-6, said they received a report that suspicious men were sighted in the area.

The three escapees hid in a makeshift house, whose owner has yet to be identified, he said.

When they were found, they allegedly opened fire at the police. Celeste died, while the two escapees were able to flee, although one of them was wounded in the encounter, Dogelio said.

A firearm was found at the scene.

Dogelio said he is optimistic that the tracking team will be able to close in on remaining two escapees.

Still at-large are Francisco Epogon of Cauayan town, who is said to be part of the notorious Epogon robbery group and is facing charges for robbery with homicide and robbery with violation against intimidation of person; and Alejandro Montoya of Victorias City who has cases for carnapping, robbery, illegal possession of firearms, attempted homicide, and acts of lasciviousness.

The BJMP-6 has offered a P10,000 reward to anyone who can give information that would lead to the capture of each of the escapees.*
