Vice President Sara Duterte’ early announcement that she is running for president in 2028 is a calculated move to deflect the issue from the impeachment raps being lodged against her, Fr. Arman Onion said on Monday, Feb 23.
Onion, at a press conference to announce the holding of an anti-corruption rally in Bacolod City to mark the 40th anniversary of the People Power Revolution on Wednesday, said the beleaguered vice president must be held accountable for the graft allegations against her.
The announcement that she is running for president is politically motivated not to serve the people but to avoid answering the corruption allegations hurled against her, Onion said.
Replacing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. with Duterte certainly is not the solution to the country’s woes, a Promotion of Church People Response Negros statement distributed during the press conference also said.
“With the government run like a syndicate to serve the ends of US imperialism and bureaucrat capitalists, no one among the ruling elite will solve the problem of widespread corruption,” it said.
Berlita Ante of Bayan Negros said Duterte’s early declaration of her 2028 presidential bid is a calculated diversion from her impeachment and the issue on her use of confidential funds.
Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr., who endorsed the fourth impeachment complaint against Duterte, also said on Monday that the charges against her are about accountability and her fitness to continue holding that office.
Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, when asked Duterte’s presidential bid, said “good luck”.*
