Some water sources in San Carlos City have tested positive for bacteria, Mayor Renato Gustilo said Monday, February 27.

The patients’ positive for amoebiasis admitted at the San Carlos City Hospital also rose to more than 230 on Sunday, he said.

Gustilo declared a state of health emergency in San Carlos City last week amid the rising amoebiasis cases.

Six water samples tested at their in-house laboratory lately were found positive for bacteria, he said.

However, they are still waiting for the official results from accredited laboratories in Bacolod, he said.

There were also seven San Carlos City inmates who were hit with amoebiasis, but water samples taken from the jail tested negative for bacteria, he said.

They are still determining the source of the amoebiasis that hit the inmates, he said.

Water samples have been taken from areas where patients hit with amoebiasis are from for testing, he added.

They are also conducting random water sampling of other water sources in the city, the mayor said.

Residents are advised to boil the water that they drink, Gustilo said.*
