Sagay distributes 18,000 tilapia fingerlings to boost food security

The Sagay City government distributed 18,000 tilapia fingerlings to 16 beneficiaries as part of its food security and livelihood support program at the City Agriculture Hatchery in Brgy. Rizal,  recently.

Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, together with City Agriculturist Julie Delima and her staff, led the distribution aimed at helping residents cope with the rising cost of basic commodities, a press release from Sagay City said Monday, April  27.

The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR–NIR) also augmented the city’s supply with an additional 25,000 fingerlings to support the program.

Cueva said fish farming is a practical way to strengthen household food supply, especially during times of crisis, and encouraged residents to maximize available spaces for small-scale aquaculture.

“In times like this, cooperation and resourcefulness are important. Even those without farmland can raise fish through small ponds and contribute to their family’s food supply,” the mayor said.

He added that the city government will continue to support agriculture-based initiatives, including vegetable production, livestock, poultry, and fisheries, to ensure steady food sources for Sagaynons.

The mayor also shared that the city is exploring programs to purchase produce from local farmers for redistribution to communities with limited access to food production.

He expressed optimism that beneficiaries may begin harvesting tilapia within four to six months, contributing to both food availability and additional income.

Among the beneficiaries were Ronie Tingson of Brgy. Maquiling and young farmer Kenneth Montinola of Brgy. Puey, whom the mayor commended for their initiative.

Cueva also encouraged Montinola, a Grade 12 student, to engage in youth programs such as Batang Sagaynon to further develop his skills.

Delima thanked the mayor for his continued support to the agriculture sector and expressed hope that the beneficiaries will serve as examples to other farmers and residents.

The mayor said the initiative forms part of the LGU’s continuing efforts to strengthen local food systems and support sustainable livelihoods at the community level.*
