Sagay, Croatia eye tourism partnership

Croatia’s Tourism Board of Medimurje County and the Sagay City government are eyeing the signing of a memorandum of understanding to promote the city’s tourism on the international scale and improve organic and “biodynamic” agriculture.

Rudi Grula, chief executive officer of the Medimurje County Tourism Board, and Dijana Posavec, director of Dr. Rudolf Steiner Center, both of Croatia, and Sundeep Kamath, a biodynamic agriculture adviser from India, visited Sagay and met with the local government executives to discuss possible partnerships, recently.

Medimurje is a county located in the northernmost part of Croatia and one of the smallest yet densely populated areas of the country, a press release from Sagay City said Saturday, June 10.

Rep. Alfredo Marañon III (Neg. Occ., 2nd District), Sagay Vice Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, City Agriculturist Julie Delima, and City Administrator Ryan Bonghanoy met with them and discussed the tourism and agriculture situation of the city.

The Tourist Board of Medimurje County is a regional tourism organization that was founded to create and promote the identity and reputation of the county, while the Dr. Rudolf Steiner Center is a multidisciplinary institution that integrates science, art, and tourism involved in biodynamic agriculture, the press release said.

The Croatian visitors discussed their intention to ink a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in increasing Sagay’s recognizability, attractiveness, and revenues in target markets and help in the upscaling and improving organic production and processing via training on organic on beyond organic best practices of biodynamic agriculture and support the development of a local food system, it added.

Marañon welcomed the proposal and is optimistic to forge this partnership to promote Sagay to the European market.

“This can really open opportunities for Sagay and other LGUs in the district to learn from their best practices and know more about biodynamic agriculture”, the congressman said.

Cueva said this is an affirmation that we are “on the right track in our sustainability path and we welcome this development brought about by their visit”.

The Croatian delegation visited various tourist attractions of Sagay like its public plaza, Museo sang Bata sa Negros, Suyac Island Mangrove Eco-Park, Sikad Tour in Purok Bougainvillea in Brgy. Old Sagay, Kape Albarako of artist Nunelucio Alvarado, and Entings Restaurant of Sagay.*
