Sagay City kicks off 51st Nutrition Month with focus on food security

Sagay City officially launched its 51st Nutrition Month celebration in July, prioritizing food security and nutrition awareness under the national theme, “Food and Nutrition Security – Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin.”

Mayor Leo Rafael “Bebo” Cueva, who chairs the City Nutrition Council, marked the start of the month-long campaign on Monday, July 7, by planting papaya trees and various vegetables at the City Agriculture Demonstration Farm. This symbolic act promoted sustainable food sources adaptable for households and communities.

Cueva emphasized empowering families through backyard gardening, food sufficiency, and climate-smart farming, stating, “Good nutrition begins with accessible and nutritious food at home.”

He urged Sagaynons to support local agriculture and embrace healthier lifestyles.

As a pre-launch initiative from June 23 to 30, live chickens were distributed to families with undernourished children, spearheaded by City Veterinarian Dr. Modesto “Mojo” Cañonero. This effort is part of Sagay’s broader food security program to enhance protein access in underserved households.

City Nutrition Action Officer Mary Visie Tajanlangit highlighted food and nutrition security as a fundamental human right, advocating for inclusive and sustainable food policies. Key messages for the campaign include proper nutrition during a child’s first 1,000 days, the benefits of growing one’s own food, supporting local farmers, and reducing food waste.

The city is promoting the SAPAT strategies: Strengthen food policies, Amplify public awareness, Promote sustainable food systems, Activate partnerships free from conflict of interest, and Transform local food systems.

The ceremonial planting was attended by Vice Mayor Narciso “Narwin” Javelosa Jr., Sangguniang Panlungsod members, city nutrition staff, Bureau of Fire Protection personnel, barangay nutrition workers, OJT students, and City Agriculture staff.

Throughout July, Sagay will host school campaigns, cooking demonstrations, and community events aligned with the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2023–2028. Mayor Cueva hopes to foster collaboration across sectors to ensure every Sagaynon has access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food.*
